ALROSA to take measures to maintain production after Mir flood

MIRNY, republic of Yakutia, Sep 25 (PRIME) -- A recent flood of the Mir mine will damage production capacity of Russian uncut diamond mining giant ALROSA, but the company will take measures to minimize it, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov told reporters on September 23.

The mine was flooded on August 4, when the mine, which accounted for about 9% of the company’s combined production in 2016 and for almost 11% in January–June 2017, was shut down.

“Of course, the combined amount of diamond production will change after the accident. But the company plans to start development of new fields, and to expand production not just in Russia, but outside the country…In general, the company will take measures to minimize the situation so that results of the company stay at least at the level of previous years,” Siluanov said.

ALROSA said in a statement that it plans to attract an independent consultant – SRK Consulting – to investigate the reasons of the flood in addition to the commission of the Federal Service for Environmental, Technological, and Nuclear Oversight. The independent consultant will work until the end of 2017, the company said.
